Tiger Corporation (President: Yoshisato Kikuchi, Head Office: Kadoma, Osaka), a world leader in thermal control technology, has pledged to retain spare parts for 10 years and has surveyed 551 men and women in their 20s to 60s in a series of surveys on home appliances. In this second volume of the series, we are pleased to announce the results of a survey on attitudes toward rice cooker replacement and repair. In the survey, about 84% of respondents have ever replaced their rice cookers. The most common reason given was “because it broke down,” at 67.1%. Even though 90% of respondents wanted to keep using their appliances as long as possible, 57.5% said they “did not know” that rice cookers can be repaired, which was higher than the percentage of respondents who “knew” about it.

Parts necessary to maintain the functionality of home appliances are called “repair performance parts,” and home appliance manufacturers hold on to these parts for a certain period of time so that they can be repaired in the event of a product failure. For example, the manufacturing labeling rules stipulate that rice cookers, for example, must be kept for six years after discontinuation of production, but Tiger Corporation has set the retention period for all products at 10 years in order to ensure the longevity of your beloved appliances. Among those who have ever replaced their rice cookers, as many as 61.6% have done so more than once. The most common reasons for replacing their rice cooker were “because it broke down,” “because the inner pot was broken or damaged,” and “because I was interested in a new product. The top reason given was that the product had to be replaced due to a breakdown, regardless of one’s own will.

90% of the respondents answered that they would like to continue using their current appliances for as long as possible. On the other hand, when asked “Did you know that rice cookers can be repaired?”, 57.5% said they did not know, exceeding the percentage of respondents who said they did.

Despite the fact that the majority of respondents want to keep using their current appliances for a long time, more than half of them do not know that rice cookers can be repaired. Without knowing that rice cookers can be repaired or parts can be replaced, no matter how attached they may be to them, once they break down, the only option is to throw them away, which may have been frustrating for some people. The minimum holding period for “repair performance parts,” which are parts necessary to maintain the functionality of home appliances, is specified for each home appliance in the manufacturing and labeling regulations, and home appliance manufacturers hold parts that can be repaired for a certain period of time in the event of a product breakdown. Before choosing to throw away your favorite product, you have the option of repairing it and using it for a long time.

Comment from Mr. A of the Customer Service Department: The industry standard for rice cookers is to keep them for six years after production ends, but based on customer feedback, Tiger has been keeping repair performance parts for 10 years, so we can provide repairs for that period.

There are about 200 parts for just one rice cooker, so holding them all requires space in terms of storage, but customers are often happy when we tell them, “We still have the parts, so you can repair and use them.” However, we are often pleased when we tell our customers that we still have the parts and can repair and use them. We have even received letters like the following.
