Tiger Corporation promotes ESG management initiatives to build the future with a focus on temperature for the next 100 years of progress

Tiger Corporation (President: Yoshisato Kikuchi, Headquarters: Kadoma City, Osaka), a world leader in thermal control technology, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding on February 3, 2023.

Our company started out by manufacturing and selling glass vacuum flasks, and over the next 100 years, we have continued to devote ourselves to the manufacture of products that deal with temperature and make full use of vacuum insulation and heat control technologies.

As we enter our second century in business, we will strive to contribute to a sustainable society by continuing to promote ESG management in a way that emphasizes environmental and social considerations and the establishment of a sound administrative system.

At Tiger Corporation, our employees operate under two key values: creativity with a focus on substance, and reliability with complete transparency.   These are values that have been passed down since the company’s founding, and they reflect the company’s continued commitment to manufacturing products that customers can cherish for years and years. In our ESG management efforts, we will respect these values and implement initiatives aimed at delivering products that enrich the lives of our customers and creating a sustainable society.

Tiger Corporation’s ESG Management Initiatives

The four pledges of Tiger’s vacuum insulated bottles:

In the manufacture of our vacuum insulated bottles, we have been working to address social issues related to health, human rights, and the environment by promoting sustainable action based on the following four promises since July 2020. First, NO Conflict Minerals refers to our refusal to use regulated minerals that finance armed groups and others in conflict areas. Second, NO Fluorine refers to our refusal to use environmentally hazardous fluorine coatings, instead opting to use alternative anti-coloring technology that is equally effective. Third, YES Our Own Factories is our promise to guarantee responsibility for quality to protect the health of our customers by making products at our own factories. Finally, NO Plastic Waste is our promise to reduce PET bottle consumption through the use of personal reusable bottles.

Company-wide Zero PET Bottles campaign

In order to promote our promise of “NO Plastic Waste” from a corporate perspective, we have been implementing our “Company-wide Zero PET Bottles Campaign” since October 2020. We have established soft drink filling stations where our employees can fill their own personal Tiger vacuum insulated bottles.

Promoting green procurement

Tiger promotes green procurement in cooperation with suppliers. We have established the Green Procurement Standards Manual and are working to reduce the environmental impact of all parts and materials we purchase for our company (including raw materials, outsourced processed parts, packaging materials, and secondary materials) by complying with each country’s regulations on chemical substances contained in products.

Suppliers are requested to submit survey data on the management system and chemical substances contained in their products so that they can comply with our standards for designated chemical substances.

Efforts for circular economy

We believe it is our duty as a manufacturer of stainless steel bottles to carry out recycling-oriented manufacturing, and in 2021, we launched a circular economy initiative to reduce the burden of the stainless steel recycling process and to recycle resources by accepting and collecting used stainless steel bottles from other manufacturers in addition to Tiger products. We have established a target collection rate for up to 2030 and succeeded in collecting approximately 7,500 bottles in the first year. We will continue to work with companies, local governments, and organizations to create a sustainable society.

10-year retention of performance parts for repair

At Tiger, we retain performance parts for repair (*1) for 10 years after each product is discontinued, allowing us to perform repairs and sell parts. Repair services for products are also available for 10 years (*2). This allows customers to repair cherished products that they have been using for many years and continue using them even if they break.

We will meet our customers’ expectations by offering them a wider range of choices for repair and replacement. From an environmental standpoint, we hope to also contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by devising ways for our customers to continue using the same product for longer periods of time.

*1 Performance parts for repair refer to parts necessary to maintain the function of the product. With the aim of further improving service, on May 30, 2019, our company extended the retention period for performance parts for repair for all products to 10 years after production is discontinued.

*2 If the product is out of warranty, we will repair it on a chargeable basis.

Solving social issues through our core business

Commercial-use electronic jar that keeps rice warm under a vacuum (炊きたて) JHV-A 540

In recent years, the efforts of companies to reduce commercial food loss/waste generated from food-related operators have been important. Specifically, food loss in the food service industry is caused by the disposal of leftovers from served dishes and excess foods prepared more than necessary.

This product was developed by incorporating the technique to keep rice warm under a vacuum into the electronic jar for keeping warm for commercial use under the 炊きたて brand that has been loved by the users for over 50 years. The electronic container, which uses a vacuum pump, is capable of keeping cooked rice warm under a vacuum continuously for up to about 16 hours. This product eliminates the need to dispose of excess rice after closing a store by keeping it under a vacuum, providing a solution to food loss in the food service industry.

Health Declaration

The health of our employees is a top priority in realizing our corporate philosophy to “spread joyous harmony throughout the world,” and we will strive to create an environment in which each and every one of our employees can maximize his or her potential and maintain their physical and mental health as they flourish.  To this end, we established a health management promotion system in the 2019 fiscal year and are implementing specific measures to maintain and improve the health of our employees.

Promoting Diversity

We consider the promotion of diversity to be one of our key management strategies for realizing our corporate philosophy to “spread joyous harmony throughout the world.” In order to increase the number of women who are candidates for managerial positions in the next generation, we have established the following action plan to strengthen our corporate environment and systems.

Aims

(1) Continue to ensure that at least 30% of newly recruited employees are women

(2) Enhance support schemes for balancing life events such as birth and child raising with work

(3) Work towards men’s childcare leave ratio of at least 80% and encourage men’s participation in raising children
