WHAT IS GELATO

Gelato is an Italian frozen dessert, very similar to ice cream. However, there are a couple notable differences. Gelato typically has less fat than ice cream – and has a more dense and creamy texture. Additionally, there are no eggs or egg yolks used when making gelato.

This banana chocolate gelato recipe is full of chocolaty goodness and bits of roasted macadamia nuts throughout. But the real draw here is that we’re using macadamia milk to make this gelato instead of cow’s milk.

MACADAMIA MILK GELATO

Macadamia milk has a rich, creamy texture with a nutty, buttery, slightly sweet flavor profile. It’s those delicately nuanced tasting notes and thicker viscosity that make it the perfect plant milk to use in gelato. In fact, we were hard pressed to tell the difference when we did some informal taste tests in our test kitchen!

HOW TO MAKE BANANA CHOCOLATE GELATO IN A BLENDER

Just load all of your gelato ingredients into your Tiger blender. Since gelato is churned at a lower speed than ice cream, you’ll want to set your blender to around 3 or 4 and blend for a minute. Then simply transfer everything to a freezer safe container and place in the freezer for 3-4 hours (or until set).

TIPS ON SERVING

  • If you try to scoop your gelato right out of the freezer, it might be hard enough to bend your favorite ice cream spoon! Set it on the counter for 5 minutes to allow it to soften a bit. Soaking your spoon or ice-cream-scoop in hot water prior to scooping can ease things up as well.
  • On a similar note, try serving gelato at a slightly higher temperature than you would serve ice cream if you can. This enhances its creamy consistency – and allows your tastebuds to better perceive the flavors.
  • It’s delicious on its own. But for the full dessert experience, top with crushed macadamia nuts, chocolate sauce or fresh fruit – or go all out and make a banana split!
