[Tiger Corporation Survey Series on Replacing and Repairing Home Appliances vol.1]
More than 60% of respondents have the oldest appliance in their homes longer than 10 years.
One in three rice cookers has been in use for more than seven years.

Appliances that are often used for many years are also checked for after-sales service at the time of purchase.
Tiger Corporation holds repair parts for 10 years, longer than the industry standard,
to ensure the longevity of your beloved appliances.

Tiger Corporation (President: Yoshisato Kikuchi, Headquarters: Kadoma, Osaka), a world leader in thermal control technology, surveyed 551 men and women in their 20s to 60s about replacing and repairing home appliances.

In the first phase, we surveyed respondents on the number of years they have owned their appliances and their attitudes toward replacing them during this period of demand for home appliances as they prepare to move and start new lives. We found that one out of three respondents had used rice cookers, one of our main products, for more than seven years. About 60% of the respondents answered that the appropriate number of years to replace a rice cooker is 7 to 10 years.

Once purchased, appliances that are used for many years may require replacement of parts as they are used for longer periods of time. For example, in rice cookers, it is possible that the inner pot or lid may peel, or the packing may become worn due to steam from cooking rice. By considering the after-sales service aspect, such as whether or not the parts can be replaced for a long period of time, when purchasing the product, you can choose not only “replacement” but also “repair” or “parts replacement” in the event of an accident.

Parts necessary to maintain the functionality of home appliances are called “repair performance parts,” and home appliance manufacturers hold on to these parts for a certain period of time so that they can be repaired in the event of a product failure. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the retention period for rice cookers, for example, is set at six years after discontinuation of production, but Tiger Corporation has set the retention period for all products at 10 years in order to improve customer service. (*) We are committed to providing after-sales service that allows our customers to use their beloved home appliances for a long time.

*Some parts may not be supplied after less than 10 years depending on material procurement, equipment conditions, etc.
*Some repair parts may not be available for 10 years.
*Please refer to the detail page ( https://www.tiger-corporation.com/ja/jpn/about-us/after-service/ ) for other detailed conditions of 10-year retention.

Survey Summary

  • The oldest appliances in the house are refrigerators in first place and televisions in second place. Ten percent of respondents also answered that a rice cooker is the oldest home appliance.
About 90% of respondents have owned their oldest appliance for more than 7 years, and about 60% have owned their oldest appliance for longer than 10 years.
  • One out of three respondents indicated that the rice cooker they use at home is more than 7 years old.
  • About 60% of respondents answered that the appropriate number of years to replace a rice cooker is 7 to 10 years.

When purchasing home appliances that will be used for a long time once purchased, check the after-sales service aspect, such as the retention period of performance parts for repair. Tiger Corporation retains repair parts for 10 years, longer than the industry standard, so you have a wider range of options for “repair” and “parts replacement.

Retention Period for Repair Parts

The survey results show that about 90% of the respondents have been using their appliances for more than 7 years, and among those who own rice cookers, about 40% have been using them for more than 7 years.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, each home appliance has a minimum holding period for “repair performance parts,” which are parts necessary to maintain the functionality of home appliances, and home appliance manufacturers have a certain number of years to hold parts that can be repaired in the event of a product failure. The minimum holding period is 9 years for refrigerators, 8 years for color TVs, and 6 years for rice cookers.

The survey results show that 32% of respondents answered that the appropriate replacement period for rice cookers is 1 to 6 years, while 57% said 7 to 10 years. Therefore, Tiger Corporation has set the retention period to 10 years for all products starting in 2019 to provide after-sales service that allows customers to use their beloved home appliances longer.
