[Survey on Parental Caregiving Awareness and Concerns about Parents Living Apart from Their Parents]

2023-11-09

Although 76.1% of respondents are vaguely concerned about the possibility of having to care for a parent who lives away from home, only 12.8% of respondents are actually preparing for the care of a parent who lives away from home.

The majority of respondents (23.0%) said they see their parents who live far away from them “once a year or less. More than 50% of the respondents said they contact their parents “less than once a month,” which is less than the ideal frequency.

About 70% of the respondents who have introduced IoT devices with a watch-over function said that “the introduction of such devices has relieved the anxiety and burden of not being able to contact the person”.

– Successful use of IoT devices with a watch-over function can reduce the anxiety and burden of not being able to be contacted. –

Tiger Corporation (President: Yoshisato Kikuchi, Headquarters: Kadoma City, Osaka), a world leader in thermal control technology, conducted a survey of 313 men and women in their 30s or older who live apart from their parents aged 60 or older on November 11, 2023 (Saturday), Nursing Care Day, to find out their concerns about their parents living apart and their attitudes toward nursing care.

In 2008, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) decided to designate November 11 of each year as “Nursing Care Day” as a day to implement awareness of nursing care among the public. In this day and age when nursing care is becoming a familiar part of everyone’s life, it is important to think about nursing care and prepare to relieve anxiety and burden.

Tiger, which has released the “Pressure IH Rice Cooker with IoT Features “炊きたて” JPA-Z100″ equipped with a monitoring function that reports on how the rice cooker is being used, conducted a survey on concerns about nursing care, the ideal and reality of how often to contact and see parents living apart, the introduction status of IoT devices capable of “monitoring” and more. We found that some people are making good use of IoT devices with a watch-over function to reduce the anxiety and burden of not being able to contact them.

Since our founding, we have been dealing with “temperature” for 100 years, with “vacuum insulation technology” and “heat control technology” at the core of our business, such as warmth, coldness, and the quality to protect them. In addition to delivering the deliciousness of food with the thermal control technology cultivated for years, this product equipped with IoT functionality will contribute to joyous harmony by supporting family members who live far away from home to easily notice changes in their physical condition or unusual circumstances, and as an opportunity to communicate with them.

[Regarding the investigation]

Survey target: A total of 313 men and women in their 30s or older living apart from their parents who are 60 years old or older
Survey method: Internet survey
Survey period: October 19 (Thursday) to October 20 (Friday), 2023
*The results are rounded to the nearest whole number, so there may be some errors in the results when calculated on a stacked basis.
*When introducing the results of the survey, please include the annotation “Tiger Corporation survey”.

76.1% of respondents are vaguely concerned about the possibility of having to care for a parent in the future.
However, only 12.8% of respondents are actually preparing for nursing care.
Also, 58.1% said they have no one close to them with whom they can talk about nursing care.
It was found that many respondents are anxious but not prepared, and have no one to talk to about their concerns.

A total of 76.1% of respondents answered “yes” or “somewhat yes” to the question of whether they are vaguely concerned about the possibility of caring for their parents in the future, indicating that many people are vaguely concerned about caregiving. However, only 12.8% of the respondents answered that they are very or somewhat prepared for nursing care, and 58.1% said that they do not have anyone close to them with whom they can talk about nursing care for their parents.

We found that there are many people who are anxious about caregiving but not prepared, and that they are unable to discuss their concerns with their parents.

The ideal frequency of seeing parents who live far away from each other is “once a month” at 21.4%.
However, 23.0% actually meet with their parents “once a year or less,” indicating a large gap!

When asked about their actual frequency of meeting and their ideal frequency of meeting, we found a large gap, with 21.4% saying their ideal frequency is “once a month” but the majority saying their actual frequency is “once a year or less. Although they would like to see each other more than once a month, the actual frequency ranges from once every few months to once a year, suggesting that it is difficult to see each other frequently when living apart.

The ideal frequency of contact is “once a month” or more for about 70%, but in reality, more than 50% contact each other only once a month or less. In reality, more than 50% contact each other less than once a month, showing a large difference between the ideal and actual frequency of contact!

The frequency of contact was also surveyed. When asked about their ideal frequency of contact, 17.9% responded “once a week,” and about 70% would like to be in touch at least once a month. However, “once a month” was the most common frequency of actual contact (21.7%), and more than 50% of the respondents answered “once a month” or less frequently. It was found that many respondents actually want to keep in touch more often, but are not able to do so as often as they would like.

The top concern for parents who live apart from their parents is “Injuries such as falls” at 46.6%.
followed by “cognitive decline in household chores” and “fear of becoming a victim of crime through phone calls or visits.

When asked about their concerns about their parents living apart from them, the most common response was “Injuries such as falls” at 46.6%.
This was followed by “cognitive decline in housework” at 42.2%, and “whether or not they will become victims of crime through phone calls or visits” at 28.1%, indicating that respondents are concerned about incidents and accidents that are limited in their ability to prevent because they live apart. In addition, one in five respondents were concerned about whether they are getting enough to eat, and although the survey covered those with parents aged 60 or older, it is expected that these concerns will become more significant as the parents’ age increases.

More than 90% of respondents have not yet installed IoT devices with a “watch over” function that allows them to check on their parents’ activities.
However, about 70% of those who have actually introduced such devices say that the introduction of such devices has relieved them of the burden and anxiety of not being able to contact their parents!
IoT devices with a “watch over” function are being well utilized to eliminate anxiety and burdens.

More than 90% of households have not yet introduced IoT devices with a “watchful waiting” function that actually allows them to check on their parents’ activities, indicating that among those with parents aged 60 or older, the number of those actively using such devices is still low. However, about 70% of those who have already introduced IoT devices answered that “the introduction of IoT devices has relieved the anxiety and burden of not being able to keep in touch”. This indicates that the use of IoT devices with a “watchful waiting” function can help to alleviate the anxiety and burden caused by the lack of frequent visits and communication.

Tiger Pressure IH Rice Cooker with IoT Features “炊きたて” JPA-Z100 is equipped with an IoT function that allows the user to view the daily status of rice cooking with a “watch over” notification, providing peace of mind even when parents are away from the rice cooker!
This is a preliminary step to installing a camera/monitor, and enables “loose monitoring” without placing a burden on the parents.

When it is difficult to keep in touch with parents who are far away from home because they may not want to be contacted too often, they may be bothered, they are not digitally savvy and may not respond to your messages, but a camera makes them feel like they are being watched… Tiger Pressure IH Rice Cooker with IoT Features “炊きたて” JPA-Z100 enables “relaxed monitoring” without burdening parents.

User’s Voice

Users in their 30’s and users in their 60’s

Communication has “increased” through the use of the rice cooker.
I appreciate that I don’t have to contact them to know if they are still alive by watching their rice cooker every day.I am very glad to use the watch over function. My mother is still in good health, but I don’t know what will happen, and it is difficult for me to take my baby with me because I live far away, so I thought this system was good for me to know easily.

Her own age unanswered, user in her 80s

Communication has “somewhat increased” with the use of the rice cooker.
I don’t have to do anything because the system automatically notifies me. I thought it was great that the amount of rice cooked and even the electricity bill were displayed concretely. In fact, I wondered what the watch-over function would be like, but I was glad to receive notifications via the app and it was easy to understand. I was impressed by the great age we live in.

Myself in his 30s, user in his 60s

Communication has “somewhat increased” with the use of the rice cooker.
Every day I receive a notification when the rice is done cooking and when the report is sent at 8 p.m., so even if I don’t open the app, I can know that “I cooked rice = I am doing fine = I am doing well” and I feel very relieved.
