Ingredients
- 1 large egg, whisked
- 50ml milk
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- ½ tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 2 thick slices bread
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Pure maple syrup, optional
Directions
- In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, flour, and cinnamon powder, until combined.
- Add a piece of bread to the bowl and allow the mixture to soak for 3 minutes. Flip the bread over and soak for another 3 minutes.
- Meanwhile, turn the multi cooker on and select the saute option.
- Set the heat to high and press start.
- Set the cooking time to 30 minutes and press start. The multi cooker will take a few minutes to preheat and will beep when it’s ready.
- Add 1 tablespoon of butter and when the butter is bubbling, take the bread out of the bowl and add it to the multi-cooker. Soak the remaining slice of bread in the egg mixture, following the same steps.
- Cook the bread that’s in the multi-cooker on each side for 3 to 4 minutes, until the outside is golden brown. Transfer the French toast to a plate and serve.
- Repeat the same step for the remaining bread. Serve with maple syrup.
A BREAKFAST CLASSIC. AN UNORTHODOX COOKING METHOD
We’re always game for a late breakfast. And whether it’s a healthy berry oatmeal, a fortified Spanish omelette – or a fluffy, thick chocolate and blueberry pancake, there’s a lot of latitude when it comes to breakfast and brunch foods. When it comes to French toast, we’re locked into the sweet, cinnamon and maple syrup flavor profile – but there’s no need to get a pan on the stovetop! Because we’re using a multicooker for perfectly browned slices, and quick post-brunch kitchen clean up.
HOW TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST IN A MULTICOOKER
On French toast days, we like to get an assembly line going in the kitchen. We soak thick cut bread in a whisked mixture of eggs, milk, sugar, flour and cinnamon powder for about 3 minutes per slice. Then we move the soaked bread to the pre-heated (and buttered!) inner pot of the Tiger Multi Cooker with the saute setting selected and the lid open. Cook until one side is golden brown, then flip and repeat. While we’re cooking the French toast, we’re soaking more pieces of bread in the eggy mixture – so when one piece is ready to serve, we’re prepared to cook the next. Treating the cooking process like a production line is super fun for the kids too!
RECIPE TIPS AND VARIATIONS
- Use the bread you like best. Some classic options are brioche, pre-sliced sandwich bread and shokupan (Japanese milk bread). Use your favorite!
- Make sure to let the bread rest in the whisked mixture. The bread should rest long enough to soak in some of the liquid. A short dip can result in French toast that is on the dry side. No bueno.
- Top with berries or whipped cream. While we’re butter and maple syrup purists at our test kitchen, there are no rules when it comes to toppings. Fresh blueberries, raspberries or sliced strawberries are delicious. And whipped cream delivers rich, fluffy goodness in spades.
