What is Kyo-Yuzen?

Among a number of traditional crafts nurtured together with cultures in various regions in Japan,
Kyo-Yuzen, one of the traditional crafts in Kyoto, is a dyeing technique characterized by colorful and elegant patterns.

DESIGN CONCEPT

TORA

The tiger and bamboo motif was commonly used in boys’ kimonos from the Taisho period (1912 to 1926) to the Showa period (1926 to 1989).
The design depicts a family of tigers including a father calmly staring at you, a mother tiger, and a spoiled child tiger biting the mother’s back.
The bamboo that grows straight up and is said to represent a strong vital force is drawn around the tigers; the design expresses the parents’ wish that their children will grow up to be healthy, strong, and resilient like a brave tiger living in a bamboo grove.

TSURU

This motif called unkan no tsuru (cranes between the clouds) depicts cranes flying through the clouds.
The crane symbolizes longevity and is considered an auspicious design.
The crane about to fly in a standing position looks stunning. For these reasons, so many designs inspired by the crane have been used traditionally in the kimono patterns and family crests.
Looking at the design closer, you will find pairs of cranes and one of each pair has its mouth closed while the other has it open, meaning that they work well in synch with each other to accomplish one thing.

ONAMI

This design was created based on the invigoratingly dynamic waves drawn by Hokusai Katsushika, a genius artist in the Edo period (1603 to 1868).
Vigorous waves have been stylized from old times. They represent perpetuity because waves break on the shore and retreat constantly and repeatedly, and hence it is considered an auspicious design.

LayerCoat

Colors and fine patterns are layered carefully to reproduce the three-dimensional feel and texture of a motif.

The most notable feature of this vacuum-insulated bottle is the three-dimensional surface finish that matches the designs. Tiger’s proprietary technique using leading-edge technology comes into play to reproduce delicate textures and designs like Kyo-Yuzen.
Colors and fine patterns are layered carefully to reproduce the three-dimensional feel and texture of a motif.
The method of adjusting the way of layering patterns for each design to obtain a texture close to the original texture of a motif, ranging from craft such as gold leaf to an appearance of a kimono woven from dyed threads, is the true value of our technique.
